Gas Cut Off At Christchurch From 6 p.m. to 6. a.m.
P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, April 16. Until further notice, Christchurch, will be without gas from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. The,restriction was started this evening. It was announced by. the Christchurch Gas Company this afternoon. “Circumstances beyond the com-’ pany’s control” were given as the reason for the restriction, and the company’s statement gave no indication When normal supply would be resumed. Mr. F. E. Graham, Chairman of Directors of the company, said that he was not prepared to say anything further. Asked when the supply would be resumed, Mr. Graham said: Resumption will be as soon as is humanly possible.” The secretary of the Christchurch Gasworkers’ Union, Mr. W. H. Mathison, visited the works this afternoon, and he did not hear of any stoppage of supply. The unforseen circumstances w'ere in no way caused by the union or men he said. Those persons who were listening to the local, broadcasting stations at 2.30 p.m. to-day received the first news of the restriction. Other persons heard the news later in the afternoon, but many did not know anything about the restriction, and they were mystified when their supply was cut down at 6 p'.m.
