FINNISH SHIP’S GRIM VOYAGE

CAPETOWN, mA. 24. A four-masted Finnish barque, the Passat, has completed a grim eightytwo day voyage from the Baltic. She was leaking and without canvas for fifty-three days. The crew and the twelve passengers were almost without food. The ship left Sweden on New Year’s Eve. An Atlantic gale spoiled much of her food. It swept away two lifeboats and all her canvas. A leak opened, and for fifteen days the crew and the passengers baled water which was sometimes three feet deep in the cabins. The Passat for three weens was almost becalmed. She carried timber for Capetown.
