Dry Spell on West Coast Affects Timber Workers
The recent dry spell on the West Coast has had' a serious effect in the Nelson Creek-Ngahere district, and despite representations to local authorities, bush workers in the area have been unable to obtain water for domestic purposes. A special meeting of tl;e Nelson Creek-Ngahere branch of the Westland Timber Workers’ Union was called last night to discuss the position, and it was decided that the following resolution be set before the State Forest Department at Hokitika to-day:— “That members of the Union have decided that if water is not made available for essential household purposes before Friday (March 21), they will be forced to cease work. The men have a feeling of frustration, and are of the opinion that the present position should not arise whereby they have to cease work to service their homes manually. All representations to the Grey County Council by the secretary of the Union branch have so far brought negative results”.
