LAYER OF DUST MAKES GOING DEAD AT ESPOM WORKOUTS
(Special to Argus). AUCKLAND, March 18. Some smart trials were registered at Epsom to-day by horses engaged in the Cambridge Trotting Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. The best efforts credited to Frances Bel, Gailworthy, Reclamation, Tiny Tot, Marshal Ney, Sura Wave, and Joan McKinney. A thick coating of dust made the going dead. Horses worked the reverse way. Marshal Ney (V. L. Mackie) went away one second behind Sura Wave (A. O. Hill), at the two miles, Indian Lad (A. F. Barron) going four seconds later. At the end of the first half-mile in 1.13 2-5, Joan McKinney (C. Pauli) joined the leaders, but Marshal Ney finished well to take the honours in 4.37. He ran the last mile in 2.14, each half in 1.7. Sura Wave did his work solidly, while the effort of, the novice, Joan McKinney, in covering the mile and a-half in 3.2'4 3-5 was attractive. Accompanied by Devadus (J. R. Boyce) over the first mile in 2.18, Indian Quest (G. H. Stubbs), and Certify (W. Fleming), completed two miles in 4.41, with the latter going a little better than his stablemate at the finish. The first mile and a-half was covered in 3.26 2-5. Volition (T. C. Maxted), who went about six seconds behind the trio, was the same distance away as the mile and a-half was passed. USEFUL TRIAL Reclamation (L. J. Mahoney), beginning smartly, led All Credit (I. R. Morrison) throughout a mile and a-half in 3.31, a good effort for a maiden trotter. The first mile was covered in 2.19. Reclamation is not very big, but he trots very solidly. Except for a break near the finish, All Credit went well, putting in a fine dash over the final furlong. Grattan Star (P. Rodgers) was going away from Sure Rey (J. Munro), who had made the pace, and run a mile and a-half in 3.35. The first mile took 2.24. BOOKED FOR FURTHER RACES Grattan Star and Sure Rey will leave for Cambridge to-morrow, and will go on from there to New Plymouth. They will be accompanied by Noble de Oro, who is to race at the Taranaki and Hawera meetings.
Frances Bel (L. J. Mahoney), and Gailworthy (J. Paton), finished clear of Pirate’s Jewel (W. S. Boyd), at the conclusion of a mile and a-quarter in 2.49 3-5. The pace was solid all the way, the last half being run in 1.6 3-5, a very smart effort under the conditions.
Baby Grand (A. W. Broughton), worked very smoothly over a mile and a-quarter in 2.53, sprinting the last quarter in 33sec. Baby Grand is to race at New Plymouth and Hawera.
Simla Hall (J. Maguire), who is to make his next appearance at Hawera, covered two miles in 4.46, the last half-mile in 1.9.
Tiny Tot (C. A. Cutts), and Mustang (I. R. Morrison), went away nine seconds behind Arabin (C. Webb), but after leading past the mile in 2.28, the last named broke and the two pacers beat him over a mile and a-half. Tiny Tot, who paced freely, was; slightly ahead of Mustang in 3.32. After going the first mile in 2.22,. Arabin finished on again two lengths away in 3.41 3-5.
