RISE IN AUSTRALIAN FARES. SYDNEY, Feb. 19. Australian State Governments have been given permission by the Commonwealth Government train tram and bus fares and fl eight charges. These rates always have been a matter for the individual State Governments, but during the wax they were pegged by , a yoluntaiy agreement between the C os ?™ o ?’ wealth and the States. The rise rates is not necessarily automatic. It becomes a question for individual decision by each State. Increased tram and bus fares axe regarded as certain in New Wales. The tramway deficit for tne year ending oil June 30 next was estimated last year at five hundred thsusand pounds. Since then increases in the basic wage, expected penalty rates foi’ week-end work, and the granting of a 40-hour week are likely to swell the deficit to one million pounds.
