Mn. J. Smeaton has returned from a visit to his relations at Timaru, His son, Mr. F. Smeaton accompanied him.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Rodgers are spending a short holiday in the North Island.

Miss McQuarrie, who has been on sick leave, resumes her duties at Dobsen school on Monday. Mr. G. M. Daniels, whose appointment as Building and Health Inspector _was confirmed at the recent meeting of the Borough Council, was born at Wallsend and spent several years in the district before r ving to Canterbury. Mrs. R. Butterfield is at present visiting Christchurch. At present there appears to be an epidemic of a fairly severe form of influenza in the borough. Children as well as adults are affected, with the result that school®*' attendances have been very low. Mrs Rarity presided over a good attendance of members at the Dobson Women’s Institute which was held on Thursday last in the school. The meeting opened with the Institute song and Mrs Mowbray Peters read the’aspirations. The motto for the month was: “A good word is as soon said as an ill one.” Mrs McCullum gave a good report from the halfyearly council meeting which she attended in Greymouth. Mrs Mellett was elected delegate to attend the Picnic Committee meeting on December 4. Mrs Roberts read the president’s letter from Home and Country. Mrs Batey demonstrated the making of ornamental posies from felt and walnut shells. The competition (a Xmas novelty) was won by Mrs Batey, with Mrs A. Coutts 2nd. The “wandering 2/-” was won by Mrs A. B. Hall. The social half-hour, “N.Z. music appreciation in character,” acted by Mesdames T. Smith, Roberts, H. Peters, Dunn, Duggan, E. Peters and Hunter, was well received. These artists sang some very good Maori songs. Mrs Roberts was narrator, and Miss Watson was pianist. Supper was served by the hostesses, and the meeting closed with the singing of “God Defend isew Zealand.”

On a recent Saturday evening husbands and friends, of members of the Brunner Women’s Guild were entertained at an evening, which was spent in dancing, community singing and competitions. Miss Watson presided at the piano, and Mrs. Morris acted as ■ M.C. Mesdames Jackson and Eyeington were the winners of the “Honeymoon Couples,” Mrs. J. Fairman and Miss R. Bell, the Lucky Spot, and Mrs. Jackson the mystery parcel. A home-made supper was served by members of the guild. The last meeting of the guild was spent mostly on business. The “wandering Shilling” was won by Mrs. W. McPhie and Miss J. Wilson and Mrs. A. McPhie were the winners of the competitions. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Hassan and Leaker.

Some forty residents heard an address here by Mr. F. Chivers, National candidate, putting forward the main points in his Party’s platform. Mr. Chivers was given a very attentive hearing with no interjections, and at the conclusion of the address answered several questions concerning the abolition of compulsory unionism and means to be adopted in settling disputes in industry. A vote of thanks, moved by Mr. Smithers, was carried by acclamation. The Mayor, Mr. W. Gutberlet, presided. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, presided over , by the Mayor, Mr. W. Gutberlet, 'the question of overloading of local buses was discussed, and it was decided to bring the matter under the notice of the manager of the Road Services, and to press for an improvement and also decided to take up the matter of an improved mid-day service. The foreman reported that the erection of the two bus shelters had been completed except for the painting, which would be proceeded with as soon as the weather permitted. A supply of concrete pipes had come to hand and the foreman was instructed to proceed with the piping of the drain in front of the mine houses in Taylorville as soon as pressure of work permitted. The formation of several footpaths in Dobson will then be proceeded with. Permits for the erection of two new dwellings at Dobson were granted and accounts totalling £345 18s 8d were passed for payment. An application for financial assistance was received from the West Coast Health Camp Committee and it was resolved to make a donation of six guineas, approximately the cost of maintaining one child. The Chief Medical Officer of Health advised of the transfer, of the local Health Inspector, Mr. L. W. Reid to Blenheim, and recommended as his successor, Mr. G. M. Daniels, whose appointment was confirmed. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded advice of the postponement of the local elections and polls until November, 1947. The Commissioner of Transport requested a copy nf all the drivers’ licenses issued, in order that a Dominion register could be compiled. A letter was received from the Cobden Hall Committee thanking the Council for facilities provided on the occasion of the recent visit of the touring “Mirth Makers” concert party.
