LOCAL AND GENERAL

Because of bad weather conditions the Greymouth Athletic Club’s eve'nts which were to have been held o’n Saturday last, were postponed until to-morrow (Tuesday) evening.

The Pan American Airways’ clipper, Kathay, under the command of Captain Williams, reached Whenuapai from San Francisco on Saturday afternoon with eight passengers. The clipper brought nearly 4501bs of freight and 3961bs of mail. One of the passengers, D. Gaspard, of Louisiana, was a member of the Second Division of the United States Marines which was in New Zealand during the war. He was travelling to Levin to marry a- girl he met while stationed near Wellington in 1943. The Kathay is scheduled to leave Auckland on its return flight to San Francisco this morning.

Just arrived. All sizes, Boys’ Pyjamas; good quality. Post free. —H. Hamer, Kumara. —Advt.

The Minister of Transport, Mines, Labour and Marino (Hon. J. O’Brien) despite the fact that he has already addressed a large number of meetings throughout his electorate, and has still about fifteen meetings to address before election day, was in jocular mood when he addressed a meeting at Blaketown on Saturday night. He told the story of Barnum’s Circus as related in “The Mirror”, in which many people were tricked with the notice; “This’ way to the Egress”, and, instead of finding some strange type of animal, found themselves outside, and had to pay to get in again. ‘‘That’s what Syd Holland would be having us do —pay to get in again”. He added that he did not want that to happen. .;

“Of course, I find this electorate still a bit tough. In Ross, the other night, in reply to a question, I made a jocular remark about the two-to-four closing of hotels. I said I had tried to get it fixed up, but I also said it didn’t matter —we won’t take any notice of it anyhow on the West Coast”, said Hon. J. O’Brien, in the course of his address at Blaketown on Saturday evening. “There was a reporter present, and I have heard since that the National Party gave him ‘three quid’ to go down and get a report, so that they would have a full report of my speech. Now they’ve it, and I hope that it does them some good, and that they will use it. That remark which I made was sent by a' special telegram to the ‘Dominion’! I made it in a jocular- way, and I said that”.
