GENERAL CABLES

. PEKING, Oct. 14. It is authoritatively reported that Nationalist troops yesterday captured Tolun, second largest city in Chahai’ province, north-east of Kalgan. The troops were identified as the right-hand column of the threepronged Nationalist drive on Kalgan, which was captured last week. Tolun is an important canal caravan centre, controlling the roads leading to Inner Mongolia. (Rec. 3 p.m.) BATAVIA, October 14. An official communique states that the truce between the Indonesians and the Dutch is based on the stabilisation of the present military positions and the present ratio of the Allied and Indonesian forces. JERUSALEM, Oct. 14. The Jewish Agency has asked the British Government to increase the monthly quota of legal Jewish immigration to Palestine from 1500 to at least 4000 during the interim period until the London conference re-opens on Decemebr 16. TEHERAN, Oct. 14. . Prince Firouz, in a speech, said that Mr. Sultaneh’s Government would always respect the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company’s rights. MONTREAL, Oct. 14. Two Canadian paper companies, International Paper Sales and Abitibi Power and Paper announced that they will increase the price of newsprint by 10 dollars, to 84 dollars a ton. Other Canadian companies are expected to make similar announcements, resulting in a United States price increase. (Rec. 1.45 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 14. Some of the 25 hunger-striking military prisoners at Dartmoor ate their first meal for four days shortly before noon. They gave in after the governor of the prison had promised to investigate their complaints individually. The prisoners want their cases reviewed. They protest against sentences which, they claim, were for offences similar to those on the paratroopers in Malaya, which were recently quashed. An army doctor has begun an inspection of the strikers. He declared that several men were too exhausted for work.
