At Rep Soccer CANTERBURY OUTCLASSED Playing under adverse conditions at Victoria Park on Saturday, West Coast defeated Canterbury by six goals to one in the first representative Soccer match on the West Coast for seme years. Following the recent heavy rains, the ground was partially under water and heavy showers fell during the match. Play was also affected by a strong northwesterly wind. The Coast side adapted itself to the conditions and after 20 minutes’ play, had the measure of the visiting team. Canterbury, however, displayed some brilliant passing rushes and had better conditions prevailed, Coast would have been fully extended' to hold their own.

The Canterbury forward line had ’he Coast defence bustled, with McGlinchey and Tullett prominent on attack. McMillan, the Canterbury keeper, playing a sound game, drew rounds of applause on numerous occasions. The teams were as follows: West Coast: Williams. Bailey, Armstrong, Nuttall, Bowman. Play centred in Coast territory, Bailey eventually relieving with a long kick, which was picked up by Nuttall, who sent Scott away to take a shot at goal. McMillan cleared. Hard end to end play followed. From a melee in front of the Canterbury goal Ryan opened the Coast score with a’ hard drive. Next minute, Canterbury had a shot, but Williams saved well from a hard attempt by Tullett. Canterbury maintained pressure and a goal was likely till Bailey again relieved. P’lay then swept down-field. From bustling play in the Canterbury goal-mouth, Phillips added a further goal for Coast. The next goal came after more hard play. Ryan, eluding two Canterbury players, passed out to Clarke who centred and Phillips, receiving, drove the ball into the net. Using their advantage in weight to the full. Coast again attacked and Scott paved the way for a goal when he sent play to the goal mouth, where Ryan scored. Canterbury opened their account Tullett showed speed to carry the game to Coast, passing to Laffey, who drew the defence' and handed out to McGlinchey, who goaled, bringing the score to COAST 4. CANTERBURY 1.

Canterbury attacked at the outset in the second spell, with Shaw, Laffey and White making every attempt to send their forwards away. Lee, Bowman and White broke up several threatening moves. A reversal of fortunes saw Coast forwards have three attempts in succession at the Canterbury goal, McMillan giving a brilliant exhibition to keep the score down. Eventually tiie ball on rebound from the crossbar saw Clarke come in fast and drive hard to give Coast a four goal lead.
