SEDDON SHIELD

Buller’s Challenge Fails IN HARD GAME P.A. BLENHEIM, Aug. 11. In a hard fought game, dominated by two rugged packs,. Marlborough (the holders) beat Buller by live to nil in the second Seddon - Shield match of the season. The play was never spectacular, the backs either crowding wings through lack <>t penetration, or mishandling at critical moments. ■Marlborough’s try _ was the culmination of a long seige of the challengers’ line late in the first spell, when P. Taylor, lirst live-eighth, who played a heady game throughout, received from the scrum and slipped from a tackle to dive over near the posts. He converted his own try.

A feature of the game was a tussle between the front rankers, Hegglun and M'umm, both of whom have made the South Island team. Marlborough held a distinct territorial advantage throughout. The teams were:—

Marlborough: Gill, Croudis, Robinson, Jackson, Taylor, B. Fitzgerald, Ireland, Haines, Finlay, Hegglun, B. Gibb, Simpson, Bennett, M. Gibb, A. Gibb.

Btiller: F. Neighbours, R. Hawes, O. Smallholme, P. Neighbours, S. Anderson, J. Alexander, R. . Finlayson, T. Anderson, W. Beveridge, D. Neighbours, W. Taylor, J. Fox, A. Moseley, T. Coyne, M. Mumm. Both teams played strong forward games. Nearly every combined effort was stopped. Just before half-time Buller attacking strongly, were on the point of scoring after a well-sustain-ed run by the forwards, but the referee’s whistle stopped what looked like a certain score. Early in. the second half, Croudis, Marlborough three-quarter, had an unsuccessful shot at a penalty goal. Twelve minutes after half time a run by Ireland, Marlborough, was stopped by F. Neighbours, who forced down. The kicking was at times faulty. T. Anderson made a dash, but could not pass the home forwards. Buller defended' hard for a long period, Marlborough having the upper hand. Buller rallied before the end, but could not score. The defence generally was superior to the .attack. It was a fast game. Croudis, Taylir, Ireland and B. Fitzgerald played well in the Marlborough back line. The Gibb brothers and T. Hegglun did well in the forwards. Hawes, Smallholme, Finlayson, D. Neighbours and T. Anderson were prominent Buller players. INANGAHUA REP TEAM. Afterwards he said „that his brother was captain of the Duntroon team which lost the Forsyth Shield to the Public Schools in 1943. His brother is now in Japan with the occupation forces. He had written recently telling him he had to get it back. If he did not, said his brother, he had better not return to Palmerston North. Duntroon reclaimed the shield by a brilliant display after the Public Schools led by 15 to 11 with ten minutes to go. SYDNEY, August 11. Ron Rankin, the only full-back in the Australian Union team for New Zealand, sprained his ankle in a club match between Drummoyne and Manly yesterday. Most of the other selected players withdrew from their teams. Rankin’s injury is not a serious one, and it is considered probable that he will be able to make the trip.
