AUSTRALIAN RACING

(Rec. 5.30.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 10. A New Zealand horse, Gay Fort, ran disappointingly, despite being heavily backed, in the Australian Steeplechase at Caulfield. He was backed to favouritism, but he was obviously sore and did not make a race of it until the end. Only seven of the fourteen starters finished. In Sydney another New Zealand horse, Night Robe, was backed to first favourite, in spite of its recent disappointing showings, but it also failed to gain a place. The only New Zealand success on Saturday was that of First In in the Malakoff Stakes at Caufield.
