Mrs Watson and her daughter, Marie, of Waimangaroa, left yesterday cn a hcliday visit to Christchurch. Mr H. Carey, Birchfield, is visiting Nelsen. Mr Laurie McManus, of Greymouth, visited his sisters in Westport during the week-end. Mr W. K. Tatterson, of Rakaia, well-known owner-trainer of the racetoise Emulius, arrived in Westport last night, and is the guest of Mr R. Curragh, Albion Hotel". PRESENTATION TO MR G. M. POWELL At the conclusion of the Buller Hospital Board’s monthly meeting on Monday afternoon, Mr G. M. Powell was entertained by the Board members and staff in recognition of his 21 years’ service as secretary to the Board, he having recently retired from the position. Mr Jas. Ward, chairman, in presenting Mr Powell with a cheque on behalf of the members and staff, spoke in eulogistic terms of the manner in which the recipient had carried out his duties, and of the pleasant relations always existing between him and the Board. Mesdames Robertson and Tyler, the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, Messrs Niven, Dowgray, Gay, and Dr. Nansen (Medical Superintendent), and Mr Brown (secretary), also spoke. Mr Powell replied, expressing thanks for the gift, and briefly reviewed his 21 years of happy associations with the Buber Hospital. Afternoon tea brought the function to a close. i
NATIONAL CANDIDATE FOR BULLER Mr Philip Ernest McDonald, formerly of Blaketown, and now of Westport, has been selected as the National Party’s candidate for the Buller seat in the forthcoming general election. Aged 38, Mr McDonald, who is a fisherman, operating a trawler at Westport, is a member .of the Dominion executive of the National Party. His selection was made at a meeting of 105 delegates at Motueka. He was’ on a previous occasion proposed as a Nationalist candidate for Timaru, and has also acted as a Party organiser. MILLERTON MINE IDLE The miners at Millerton did not work yesterday owing to the nonarrival of the doctor, who was, however, expected last evening. It is thought that work will resume today. DENNISTON INCLINE IDLE The Denniston Incline was idle yesterday owing to a runaway waggon, caused by a defective brake.
