TRADES COUNCIL
WEST COAST NOTES (Supplied by Trades Council). Following the strong protests of the Trades Council, school committees, and home and school associations, concerning the fact that no milk had been issued to West Coast schools for the past 13 months while schools in other districts had continued to receive supplies, the milk issue was recommenced to town schools last week. Advice has been received from the Minister of Health (Mr Nordmeyer) that he has called for a report from the Director-Gen-eral of Health on the matter. He haspromised that when the report comes to hand he will again communicate with the council. The Minister of Industrial Manpower has announced that war-time manpower utilisation committees have been dissolved as from May 31 and will be replaced by employment committees covering the same industries, and representative of the same organisations. An officer of the Trades Council, after interviewing farmers of the Arahura Valley, was conducted oh an inspection of the area of land which a gold-dredging company is seeking permission to dredge, while the farmers are opposing the project. A report on .the matter will be submitted to the next Trades Council meeting. The council will then decide whether it will accede to the request of the Federated ' Farmers of Westland and support that organisation in its opposition to the proposed dredging.
