MONEY COMMANDEER
BY FRENCH’ GOVERNMENT (Rec. 6.30) PARIS, Feb. 14 The French Government has decreed that all French-owned foregin currency in French territory would be called in. It will be obligatory to hand over and to exchange it for francs at current rates. 'Die. measure becomes effective on a date to be fixed. Banks will be authorised to convert any affected account in foreign currency directly into francs. France will import between 2,00,00 and 3,000,000 foreign workers to help meet her massive manpower problems, said M. Patinaud, tile Communist Unaer-Ssecretary to the Labour Ministry. He added that French workers, in future, will be employed on production most essential to economic recovery.
The imported workers, he said, will be used for the less skilled- jobs and will be recruited mostly from Italy, with which negotiations are going on. Half a million German prisoners of the 700,000 now in France are working.
French Magistrates are holding a token strike of 15 minutes at the end of the month to call attention to their low salaries.
