BLACKBALL NOTES

. (Our Own Correspondent.) The 'annual meeting of the Roa Miners’ Union was held on Wednesday when the full complement of members took part. The balance sheet was submitted and endorsed. It showed the finances to be in a very sound position. The election of officials for the ensuing year resulted as follows: — President, Mr W. McVicar; vice-pre-sident, Mr J. Neilson; secretary, Mr Stan Perrin, Roa Road, via Blackball; treasurer, Mr D. Kidd; committee, Messrs G. Anderson, P. Mulcare, J. Clark, J. Meikle, J. Fielding; trustees, Messrs D. McFadyen and J. R. O’Donnell; check inspectors, Messrs D. McFadyen and J. Neilson; delegate to G.M.C.C.. Mr W. McVicar; delegate to West Coast Trades Council. Mr J. Fielding; auditors, Messrs G. Anderson and A. J. Walker.

The local State mine was idle on Monday, owing to trouble on the main walking road, while Roa mine was idle on Wednesday for the purpose of their annual meeting.

Mrs H. J. Campbell, of Roa, who has been away on an extended tour in New South Wales, has returned. Mrs L. Kelly, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Patricia Kelly, has been on a holiday here, as the guest of Mr and Mrs E. W. Bradshaw, Station Buildings. Mr and Mrs W. Mountford, Brodie Street, have returned from an extended holiday in the North Island. Mr H. Quinn, manager of Benneydale State mine, is at present on a visit to his relations here.

Mesdames Kerr and Gibson, of Oaro, Ea’st Coast, are visiting Mr and Mrs R. Mountford, Main Road. Miss Hannah Mountford, Main Road, has returned, after an enjoyable holiday spent in the Kaikoura district.

Blackball was in festive mood on Wednesday and Thursday, when the bowling green was utilised for some games in the West Coast championships. The visitors were entertained by the club, and several of them visited the dredges and mines, being pleased with their stay. Ikamatua Tennis Club played a return match here with the local club, the results being as follows (Blackball players named first)Nuttall and Mrs Grindle 6, Mathews and Miss N. Last week Blackball Bowying Club gave a smoke concert in honour of the Runanga Bowling Club’s champion rink, Messrs White, Armstrong, Gourlay and Hillhouse. Mr J. Neilson (vice-president) who presided, congratulated the rink on winning the N.Z. championship. The following toasts were honoured: —The King; N.Z. Bowling Council (Mr F. White, of Runanga—Mr J. Stokes, of Cobden) ; Local Bodies (Mr R. Neilson — Mr R. Clark); West Coast Bowling Centre (Mr J. Braithwaite, of Runanga—Mr Stokes); Runanga Bowling Club (Mr P. Griffen—Mr A. Taylor). The chairman presented each member of the champion rink with an envelope, subscribed by the Blackball Club members, with the wish that each should buy himself something tangible, as a momenta of the win. Mr A. Grieve (Runanga) proposed “The Champion Rink”, every member of which replied, and the skip, Mr F. While, warmly thanked the Blackball Club for their great kindness. Songs wore given by Messrs A. O Donnell junr (“An Irish Lullaby”); W. McNeill (“Danny Boy”); Ron Neilson (“When Autumn Leaves are Falling”); Joe Dillon (“A Bunch of Irish Shamrocks”); B. McNeill (“Oft in the Stilly Night”); J. Braithwaite (“The Rose of Tralee”); and H. Jamieson (“The Miller’s Daughter”).
