ATHLETICS

Jack Perrin surprised last Saturday when he collected three of the four senior events on the programme. For the first time this season he entered in a sprint event, and off ten yards won comfortably in 10 1-5 seconds. He also won the discus event with a throw of 100 ft from scratch, and outclassed poorer opposition in the hop, step, and jump, covering the good distance of 42 feet. Training during the week he improved on these figures in the hop, step and jump and the discus. His performances at Christchurch in the Canterbury championships to-day will be watched with interest by local enthusiasts. <?><s><§> <3> <?> <s> It is unfortunate that Harry Cloak and Trevor Harker will not be available for the West Coast team at the Canterbury championships. Harry Cloak was going extremely well in the shot putt, and his performances with the discus have been above the average. Trevor Harker, one of the club’s best all rounders, could have been well placed in his recent performances, and would have been a serious contender for the 440yds hurdles. The junior and women’s teams to make the journey to Christchurch next Saturday, should go close to bringing some titles back to the Coast. In the juniors, B. Steel, V. Hahn and M. Eder will be the club representatives, and in the under 17 events, H. Hill and W. Kelly who have both given fine performances for youngsters recently, will no doubt make their presence felt. Kelly, a comparative newcomer to the club, performs well over the high jump, and at recent meetings has cleared over five feet. Merv Eder showed a return to form, last Saturday, and proved that he is perhaps the strongest finishing junior over middle distances. He has also given some fine exhibitions with the javelin. <♦><♦><•><•'<♦> In the women’s section D. Perrin and M. Steel will be the Coast’s strongest sprinters, the former showing good form last Saturday, collecting two firsts, three seconds, and a third. Although the fields were restricted, her times over the distance were good. L. Acker, who has some good performances with discus, and who is a competent all rounder, will make the trip also. She has a string of recent successes to her credit, and as she trains seriously, is deserving of all that has come her way. P. Sweeney, holder of the Canterbury championship 1 for the javelin event, has not been up to form recently, and disappointed in the recent West Coast championships. Her best throw is 74ft I Sins, and if she can regain this form, I will be hard to beat.

Miss P. Power will probably find her team mate, D. Fiveash her stiffest opposition in the high jump. Miss Fiveash injured her leg while jumping at Nelson, and retired after clearing 4ft 6ins. Miss Power carried on to establish a new record for Mahar Cup competition, and set the figure at 4ft lOiins. Miss Fiveash will again compete at Tuesday evening’s meeting at Victoria Park, and no doubt another interesting exhibition will be given by these two when they meet on the field of athletics.

The remaining two in the women’s section are S and H. Hornsby, both useful ail-rounders. H. Hornsby’s performances over the hurdles have impressed, and it will be interesting to see her in action against tougher opposition.

In the 880 event at Christchurch to-day, the Coast should have better than an even chance in gaining first place. N. Sutton, present Coast champion and L. Skerton (runner up) will on their performances against’ Canterbury representatives at the recent meeting held at Greymouth should be in the van from the pistol. Both have excellent times for the half mile, and on a faster track ip Christchurch, can be expected to show improvement.
