SWIMMING

Recent, fine weather has done much towards arousing interest amongst local swimming enthusiasts, and all clubs have been well represented at the Municipal Baths during the week. The Runanga club staged a successful carnival on Wednesday evening, six of the events on the programme attracting a large number of entries. <s> <•><?><s><s> <£ It’ is understood that several clubs are considering an offer from the Nelson Club to pay a visit to Nelson on March 2. The matter is to be discussed to-morrow, and details will be available next week. The Reefton club which recently took the John Burns’ Cup from Greymouth, is not to be left in undisturbed possession. There is talk of chaienges from Westport and Blackball. <«><♦> <’>■'s> <s> <t> The local baths committee has also benefitted from the fine weather experienced this week and signs are now evident that some of the ground lost earlier in the season is being made up. Of more importance than finance however is the undertaking given by the local High School to see that every child in the school, who is physically able to enter cold water, will be able to swim by February 23. <s> <»> <•> V <s> <t> The Marist High School’s swimming carnival was held on Wednesday, and the efficient manner in which it was organised throws considerable credit on those concerned. There was keen competition between house teams, and progress reports which were announced frequently, kept both spectators and swimmers alike, on their toes. Through the courtesy of the Brothers, the judging of the diving was left to an official of the West Coast Swimming Centre, who later addressed the .competitors and pointed out mistakes. Ho also spoke on the fundamentals of the dives attempted. <•> <v T T V -V

Another school event of some importance will be the Greymouth Technical High School sports on Wednesday, February 27. In the past the standard of organisation and of swimpiing in this fixture has been high, and this year’s competition should prove to be no exception-
