HUGE SUNSPOT
SMOKED GLASS PROSPECT. WELLINGTON, January 31. The Carter Observatory reports that a tremendous sunspot group has just appeared round the eastern limb of the sun over a length of at least 130,000 miles. Although' it has not yet come fully into view, the spot promises to have a considerable area and it should be possible in a few days’ time, if it lives up to expectations, to see it with the naked eye. The observatory warns, however, that in order to avoid perhaps permanent damage to the eyes, those who wish to view the group should do so only through heavily smoked or really dark glasses. Up to the present, the observatory has not been able to use all its instruments on the sunspot owing to hazy cloud covering the sky.
