CAPE’S REFUSAL

Of; Contribution to U.N.R.R.A. CAPETOWN, January 30. Explaining to Parliament why the South African Government refused to accede to U.N.R.R.A.’s request for a second contribution to its funds, the Finance Minister, Mr J. H. Hofmeyr, said the South African Parliament, when approving the original contribution of £4,500,000, stipulated that no more should be given. Mr Hofmeyr added that the Government was bound by Parliament’s decision. In addition, the drought and the food shortage had put South Africa in a most difficult position. He added that if necessity arose Parliament would have to be asked for a further grant. Opposition Party members criticised U.N.R.R.A.’s work, and alleged it discriminated in disbursements and used them for political ends.
