COAST TIMBER
“Matthew Flinders’ 5 Cargo REASON FOR LYTTELTON LOADING. WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. An explanation of the loading of a cargo of West Coast timber at Lyttelton, for Australia, aboard the steamer “Matthew Flinders” shows that the responsibility rests, entirely with the Australian Shipping Board. Hon. Jas. O’Brien protested early . in the year against the loading of West Coast timber on the “Matthew - t Flinders” at Lyttelton. The New Zealand Shipping Supply Liaison Officer in Sydney was cabled, asking that the Australian Shipping Board be approached and urged that the timber should be shipped from Greymouth. The Australian Shipping Board however, replied to the effect that the ship was urgently needed in Australia, and that because of the bar conditiins, the board would not consider loading at Greymouth, but the board agreed to have the “Matthew Flinders” load at Lyttelton provided that a minimum of five hundred thousand feet of timber was made available.
