£5000 ROBBERY
CHINESE ALLEGATION
. Men Charged at Auckland F.A. AUCKLAND,. January 28. Three men were jointly charged, before Mr J. Morling, S.M., with breaking and entering a dwelling occupied by Low On, at 30, Grey’s Avenue, by night, on January 9, and stealing a safe valued at £5O, and £5OOO in money, the property of Guy On, and another. The men were: Thomas Tua Gordon August, aged 36, an engineer; Patrick William Farrell, aged 27, a labourer; and Kwok Sing Tai, aged 55, a Chinese market gardener. The police called eight witnesses, four being Chinese. Guy On, a retired fruiterer, said that he was a part tenant of the house at 30, Grey’s Avenue, and the owner of the safe. It was used by himself and Lee Chong. There was £550 in cash belonging to witness in the safe on the night of January 8. On January 9, witness found the safe was missing. The one in Court was his property. Evidence that he was also a part tenant at 30, Grey’s Avenue, was given by Lee Chong, a market gardener, who said that he had £4500 in notes, and about £2OO in silver in the safe on the night of the alleged robbery. All of the accused pleaded not guilty. They were committed to the Supreme Court for trial . Bail was refused.
