First Sanders Cup Race WON BY AUCKLAND. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, January 28. The Davina (Auckland) defender of the Sanders Cup, won the first race of the 1946 contest at Lyttelton th/ afternoon. It was a keenly-contested race, and Auckland’s win was not an easy one. Various boats were in the lead in turn, and right to the finish Auckland was being strongly challenged by Victory, the Canterbury boat. The race was watched bv a large number of spectators, both ashore and afloat. A windward and leeward course was chosen for the race, and the boats were sent away punctually at 2.30 p.m. The wind was a light to fresh north-east one, and all of the boats carried four-man crews, with the exception of the Otago boat, which had aboard a light weather crew of three. The finish was as follows, the elapsed times being given:—■ Davina (Auckland) 2 hours 3 minutes 28 seconds, first. Victory (Canterbury) 2/4/13, second. Evelyn (Otago) 2/4/56, third. Gallina (South Canterbury) 2/7/50, fourth. Delight (Wellington) 2/8/5, fifth. Voren (Southland) 2712/48, sixth. The second race, to-morrow morning, will be over a triangular course. Should Auckland win the morning race, no race wiil be held in the afternoon, but should another boat win, an afternoon race will be probable.
