£n their search for female operatives Auckland manufacturing firms, particularly those in the clothing line, have been offering alluring conditions in the way of wages and general amenities. A new inducement, however, was offered recently by a city lirm, which advertised that it worked a 36-hour week, the premises closing at 12.15 p.m.. on Fridays. Of the total production of Morris “Tens” during November, 55 per cent, were sold for export from Britain. It is recognised that there is a large demand for these cars at home, but instructions recently issued by the management of the Nuffield Organisation emphasise that export orders are to have priority in conformity with the declared wishes of the Government. The Morris motor firm contemplates shortly starting out on a programme which will finally result in the manufacture in Australia of allAustralian motor vehicles. Ladies, have you yet called at White’s Fashion .Bargain Section?— Advt. In addition to the Liverpool and Strongman State mines, the Dobson State mine was idle yesterday. It is understood that the cause of the dispute at Dobson is in connection with boring operation in the mine. Last night there was no change in the position in the Liverpool and Strongman mines, consequent on the resolution passed at the annual meeting of the State Miners’ Union last Sunday, not to resume work until a satisfactory settlement had been obtained in respect to a dispute as to hewing and jigging rates in the Strongman colliery. No advice had been received last night as regards to a visit to the district by the Acting Minister of Mines (H'on. J. .O’Brien) or Hon. A. McLagan, io discuss the situation with the miners. A meeting of the New Zealand Coal Mines Council will be held in Greymouth next week.
At the January meeting of the' Greymouth branch of the R.S.A. the secretary stated that Victoria House had been purchased and an appeal was being made to members for £lO.OO towards the purchase price. Plans for a new building were in the course of preparations and when complete a public meeting would be called to finalise the financial arrangements. Messrs Crooks and Stokes were appointed to a committee to arrange for a continuous and increased supply of tobacco for hospital , patients. The president referred to the New Year Honours gained by Mrs F. W. Shallcrass, Mrs McKane and Mr F. A. Kitchingham, of Greymouth, and it was resolved to forward a letter of congratulation to the recipients. A donation was received from the Women’s War Service Auxiliary and it was decided ter send a letter of thanks. Balancesheets and cheques were received from the "Country Girl" committee and the Little Theatre Society, and it was decided that both organisations be thanked for their support.
