U.S. FORCES IN GERMANY

ATTITUDE TO GERMAN OFFICIALS DEPLORED. (Rec. 9.45.) TOLZ (Germany), Jan. 4. In a message to troops of the United States Third Army, LieutenantGeneral Lucian Truscott, Commander of the Eastern Military District of the American zone, declared: “Thoughtless, overbearing, and careless acts by American officers and men towards German officials impeded the accomplishment of some occupational objectives.” Decrying an attempt to “abuse, humiliate and offer indignity to German officials whom we were responsible for placing in office,” General Truscott warned against undue sympathy, towards the German people. “It is essential that we, individually and collectively, do all within our power to strengthen and dignify the present German Government in Bavaria,” he said. “German officials should be treated with the respect and consideration due to those occupying a difficult position which we imposed on them.”
