The Greymouth Fire Brigade promptly answered a call about 11 o’clock last night. There was, however, no fire. An oven chimney at F. Blanchfield’s bakehouse in Tainui Street was smoking considerably. This had been taken for a fire.

A Washington cable says the U.S. Office of Price Administration has increased the price of foreign silver to be imported into America from 45 cents per fine ounce to 71.11 cents per ounce. This means rising it to the level of the maximum price for domestic silver. The Truman Administration explained that a continuance of the former price might keep needed supplies of silver from the American market, and that it had substantially reduced imports recently.

Because of the big influx of parties of school children to Greymouth on Wednesday next for “A Country Girl” trains on all West Coast lines have been delayed until after the performance at 4.40 p.m. The Education Board is fully in accord with the proposal of giving country school children a day’s outing in town to witness this spectacular entertainment, while the R.S.A. will see that all bookings made in good time will be kept, and the visiting pupils regimented in such an orderly manner that they will all gain admission in good time for the start of “A Country Girl” at 2.15. It will be a great outing for the country children and a fitting victory celebrations finale

Several good catches of whitebait, some reaching four kerosene tins, were yesterday made in the Grey River, and the price retail was 3s. per pint. A large number of whitebaiters will again line the banks this morning for the rising of the tide. As the water upstream remains discoloured the fish may not proceed far beyond the bridges in the meantime.

In July 4,400.000 feet of gas was sold, an increase of 233,000 feet on July, 1944. Gas sales for the current year up to August were of a value of £5339, or £298 more than for the same period of the previous veai’, while residuals and fittings sales of £1739 showed an increase of £391.
