Mrs M. Clarke, of Christchurch, leaves by to-night’s rail-car on return.

Mrs O. Earl and family, of Karoro, are leaving this ’morning for Cnristchurch, where they will take up iheir residence.

Mr. J. Ramsay of Gladstone has been advised that his son, ~e ' will arrive home from the Ivlidaie East on approximately September 30.

Hon P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, has arrived at Washington, on his way to Paris to represent New Zealand at the International Labour Orgamsalion conference. Mr Webb has stood up to tlie journey well. He is meantime receiving treatment for his eye at a Washington hospital.

There was a large attendance yesterday morning at the funeral ot Mr John W. Nestor, of Kotuku, including many Otira Line residents. At St. Patrick’s Church, Rev. Father O’Flaherty celebrated Requiem Mass, and Rev. Father' J. McCarthy conducted the service at the graveside.

The death of Mrs Jane Brown, widow of the late Thomas Brown, aged 77, occurred at Hokitika yesterday. A native of Kent, England, Mrs Brown had lived for many years at Hokitika, where she was well-known and respected. She was an active member of the Anglican Church. Her husband predeceased her.two years She leaves three sisters, Mrs Amberger (Kokatahi), Mrs Wallace (Hokitika), Mrs Jones (Owaka), one brother, Samuel Breach (Lower Hutt), two daughters. Mrs Caliari and Mrs J. Foote (Hokitika), and two sons. Frederick (South Hokitika), and Thomas (Hokitika).

The death of a well-known resident of Cobden, Mrs Mary Rooney, occurred yesterday at the age of 49 years. A daughter of Mrs Mary and the late Jasper Jefferies, she had lived in Cobden the greater part of her life. Pier husband, Mr Roy Rooney, predeceased her 3 years ago. She is survived by her mother, 3 sons, Paul (Army. Lyttelton), Vincent and Basil (Cobden), and three daughters, Kathleen. Loretta and Ann (Cobden), also by one sister, Mrs J. Walker (Cobden), and two brothers, William Jefferies (Hokitika), and Thomas Jefferies (Cobden). The funeral will take place this morning. following Requiem Mass at Cobden.
