CHESS

SYDNEY, September 18. Lajoe Steiner has made practically certain the winning, of the Australian chess championship by defeating Lazare in the thirteenth round. He leads by one point, with only two rounds to go. Wade (Christchurch) was again lucxy to win his game. His opponent, A. C. Flarris, missed a winning continuation. Purdy defeated McGrath by a well-handled King’s side attack. Koshnitsky struck something like his old form to defeat Goldstein.

Leading scores with two rounds to play were: Steiner 10i; Wade ■ and Turdy each 9i; Lazare 8i; Green 7i (with two adjourned); Goldstein 7i (with one adjourned); Koshnitsky 7; Crowl 61 (with one adjourned); Watson 61. The New Zealand Council of Sport decided to cable to R. G. Wade, New ealand representative at the Australian chess tournament in Sydney, congratulating him on his great successes and wishing him continued success in his remaining games.
