It is less than a week till census night, Tuesday, 25 inst. The schedules will be left at every dwelling on or before September 25. However, failure to have schedules delivered does not free any, person from his responsibility to obtain one. The personal schedules, which include the request for a statement of income, may be enclosed in a sealed envelope and may not be opened by the owner or keeper of the house where he is boarding. The sub-enumerator is the oflicial who collects "rhe schedules after- they have been tilled in. He is authorised to verify the facts contained in the dwelling schedule, which asks for various details about a person’s place of residence, but ho may not open the personal schedule. H the latter is not completed in good faith it may be returned through the sub-enumerator for completion. The dwelling schedule has 15 questions. For purposes of the census a dwelling means any place use permanently or temporarily for habitation and includes houses, flats, hotels,

institutions, shelters, tents, trains and vessels in passage from one New Zealand port to another. Where a building is occupied by two or more household in separate flats, each flat is regarded as a separ-

ate dwelling. To be regarded as such, flats must be substantially self-con-tained. Ordinary single-room apart- ' ments are not flats for census purposes and their occupants are classified as lodgers.
