BRUNNER NOTES
(Otir Own Correspondent) Mrs A. Clark and Miss N. Clark, of Dobson, leave on Thursday for a holiday at Timaru. Miss T. McFarlane is\ spending a holiday with her parents in Taylorville. Mrs Hales, of Stillwater, is visiting her daughter, Mrs Donaldson, of Wellington, who met with a motor accident and is a patient in the Wellington Hospital. The monthly meeting of the Dobson Women’s Institute was held in the school on Thursday last. Mrs Baley presided ovei’ a good attendance. The meeting opened with the Institute song, and Mrs Wylie read the aspirations. Mrs Batey welcomed visitors from the Brunner and Stillwater Institutes. Two new members were proposed by Mrs N. Gibson, senr. A letter of thanks from Pilot Officer R. Lee for a parcel received was read. The District Federation wrote asking, for remits for a Council meeting to be held in October. The annual report and balance sheet was read. It was decided to hold a shop day for funds. The monthly competition, a child’s apron, was won by Mrs Dobin, with Mrs H. Roberts second. The wandering 2s was won by Mrs Cook, of the Stillwater .Women’s Institute. Mrs Peters gave an interesting demonstration on supper cloths from serviettes or squares of material. The social half-hour was handed over to the English members, who gave quite a treat. Their first item was old English songs and choruses. Two character sketches in costume were given by Mesdames Batey and Pickering. They were “No John”, and “To a Miniature”. A play, “Man Wanted. Dead or Alive”, written and produced by Mrs Batey, was given by Mesdames G. Smith. Batey, Walker, and Pickering. A dramatic sketch, “The Artist’s Model”, was given by Mesdames Walker and Batey. A singing and dancing ensemble. “The Gypsy of England”, was given in costume bv Mesdames Walker, Smith, Pickering. Hill and Batey. All items were well applauded by both guests and members. Between items Mrs Hill read several stories. Miss M. Watson was pianiste. A very dainty supper was served by Mesdames McCallum, Whylie, and Gibson, and a pleasant evening was brought to a close bv the singing of “God Defend New Zealand.”
