OPEN-CAST COALFIELDS
SUPPLIES FOR WHANGAREI WHANGAREI, July 9. The production of coal by the opencast method has been commenced at present on a small scale on the Whareroa field, near Whangarei, which was worked many years ago, but later abandoned. Pbesent indications are that the field will again produce coal and further investigations and development work are being carried out. The coal meanwhile is being worked for local supplies in Whangarei and is meeting with a ready sale. Negotiations are in train for working the area on a larger scale and it is expected that shortly more machinery will be on hand. About an. acre of - top-soil has been stripped by machinery to uncover the coal seam, an average of 10ft. of overburden having to be removed. The seam was previously work in the old method, there being 6ft. of coal divided by a band of fireclay. Coal that is now being recovered is chiefly pillars left from the old workings, but when the area is developed it is expected that i new seams will be uncovered. A
