Great interest was shown by. members of the Greymouth Harbour Board last evening in a plan prepared by the Board’s Engineer (Mr D. b. Kennedy) showing his Cobden deepsea harbour scheme, and the Point Elizabeth harbour scheme superimposed. The plans show that. there is a greater depth of water m the area in which it is proposed that the Cobden harbour should be built than in a similar area at Point Elizabeth, as shown in the 1905 soundings, in spite of the fact that a million yards of spoil have been deposited in the Cobden bed. The plans .show Point Elizabeth superimposed on the Grey harbour breakwaters, and lhe Cobden and Seven Mile beaches following almost identical lines, suggesting that the point and the breakwater have had a similar effect on: beach formalion. The Cobden scheme provides for a much smaller and less costly, harbour than that which it was proposed to construct at Point Elizabeth, but it would have about twice the berthage room provided by the present Greymouth harbour. The Engineer said that because of the weather it had not yet been possible to take fresh soundings at Point Elizabeth. The Board agreed that a copy of the plan should be sent to the’ Minister of Marine (Hon. J. O’Brien). In the Warden’s Court at Greymouth yesterday, before Mr. A. A.
