The hot favourite Theorist pulled her backers through when she hung on to beat Foreign Ways by a length, in the onening event, the Waimea stakes. The ' first to begin, Theorist was closely attended by Foreign Ways and Belfort as they went into the back with a big gap to Early Night. Hard ridden, Theorist held off Foreign Ways, who was a head clear of Eelfort. Richmond Trot: Beginning nicely, Single Choice was clear of Mayo Boy, Roma Grattan, Stammel in a break, and Reckless Lady as they passed the stands with a round to go. Entering the back Single Choice increased her lead Io six lengths from Mayo Bay and Roma Grattan, with Wee‘ Peg and Prince Lytton doing best of the others. There was no change as they made the home bend and Single Choice kept up her work came on for a comfortable win from Wee Peg who outdistanced Roma Grattan. Prince Lytton was next. News Agent gave a lot of trouble at the start and was hopelessly left. Nelson Jockey Club Handicap In an interesting finish, Royoney who had been well placed all the way hung on to beat Pedantic by. half a length. Ringcraft opened up a gap ot eight lengths early, hut threeilurlongs from home, All Night, Royoney and Pedantic were almost on terms with him. Once straightened up Ringcraft dropped out, and in a great tussle down the straight Royoney just held off Pedantic, wich All Night right up, third. Wakefield Hack , After being well back early, famish came up with a great buisiin ine straight to ,win going away trom Ruling Moment. Contemptuous a d Lyn-

don Lea set a fast pace early with a gap to Ruling Moment and then a break to Hamish, Simon Tor and Little Secret. Turning for home the leaders were done with, and at the distance Ruling Moment looked to have the result in sate keeping, but Hamish responding to a hard ride, overtook the leader just short of the post, to win going away by half a length. Little Secret ran past a tired lot to be third, well clear of Lyndon Lea. Contemptuous broke through the tapes just’ before the start and almost completed a circuit before being pulled up. Motueka Hack Handicap Ridden quietly out in front, Ration stayed on much better on this occasion to win by a clear length from Dash o’Dink, who had been well placed all the way. Going out of the straight there was considerable crowding and when the field straightened up Ration was clear of Dash o’Dink, Royal Tor, Here Hine, Kalahari and Master Flash. Turning for home, Ration was galloping fully ahead of Dash o’Dink, Royal Tor and Master Flash, and kept up to his work in the straight easily held Dash o’Dink at bay. In a great battle for the minor placing, Royal Tor just got home ahead of Tikakoura and Here Hine. Tikakoura was unlucky, as he met trouble more than once, on each occasion losing considerable ground. Under the circumstances his close fourth was a great performance. The well-backed Master Baron got a bad knock going out of the straight, from which he never recovered. Theorist dislodged her rider as the barrier went up. Hope Trot Consistency was rewarded when the favourite, Wee Peg, duly materialised in this event. Mauri McKinney was quickest to begin, leading into the straight the first time from Single Choice, Wee Feg, Flying Chips and Motto. Three furlongs from home Wee Peg ran through to th e front closely followed by Flying Chips, Single Choice, Bay Acron and Prince Lytton and giving nothing else a chance in the run home won comfortably by three lengths from Flying Chips. Single Choice was a length away third, with only half a head to Prince Lytton. Redwood Handicap The dividend payers in the Nelson Handicap fought their duel over again in this event. The decision going to Pedantic by a length from All Night, with Royoney threequarters of a length away third. From a good start Synthetic and Master Flash were thd first to show up from All Night, Royoney and Pedantic. Passing the half mile, Synthetic and Master Flash were two lengths clear of All Night and Royoney together, with a couple of lengths to Pedantic. Crossing the top the leaders were done with and All Night and Royoney turned for home just ahead of Pedantic. All Night had no sooner got the better of Royoney when he was tackled by Pedantic, the latter doing the better in the last fifty vards to get ihe major portion of the stake. Tahuna Hack Carrying 9.11 like a tradesman, Chellow Dene, after being up w : th the leaders ail tne way, went to the front at will in the straight to win by as much as his rider desired. It was a smooth performance on the-part of the wanner, and in his present form he should meet further successes, even though he will be meeting open classes from now on. Ration and Mysterious Melody were soon out setting the pace from Chellow Dene, Miss Myra, Highland Dance and Hamish. The order remained th e same through the back straight. .■ Once in line for home Chellow Dene came away to win with his rider sitting still. Ration was two lengths away from Miss Myra with a gap to Hamish. The totalisator showed an increase of £2005 over the previous meeting held at Westport in 1943.
