NOTED U.S. ADMIRAL
VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND. PA. AUCKLAND, March 19. Paying his first visit to New Zealand is Rear Admiral Paul Hendren, of the U.S. Naw, holder of the British D. 5.0., and the former commanding officer of the cruiser “Philadelphia.” Admiral Hendren is the commander of the U.S. Service Squadron in the South Pacific, and will spend 10 days in the Dominion on Navy business. Before his transfer to the Pacific in September last, Admiral Hendren was in the thick of the fighting m the Mediterranean theatre as commander of the “Philadelphia” during the North African campaign and the iiivasions of Sicily and Italy. P. ur ’ n ? that period the cruiser was subjects to over 50 air raids, but did not suiter a single casualty, though she wa twice reported sunk by the Germa years of age, Admiral Hendren was awarded the D.s u. the gunfire supports rendered to in Allies’ forces from July 9 to Julj -•> 1943, during the final conquest ol S'cily He also has the Legion ol Merit, a Gold Star’ in lieu of a second Legion of Merit, and the Oak Lear Cluster in lieu of a third Legion of Admiral Hendren is trave ling to Wellington, via R°t° rU3 . and he also plans to visit the South Island.
