BOOKMAKERS FINED

P.A. WELLINGTON, March 19. Police raids on Wellington bookmakers on Saturday afternoon resulted in the voluntary appearance, before Mr W. F. Stillwell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, of Robert Donaldson, 38, carrier, who was fined £125. John Charles Lindsay Thomson, who was described as having no other occupation, was fined £25. Mrs Loyes Marguerite Sands was fined £5O. When the police arrived Donaldson had taken telephone bets totalling £132 15s, and Sands £127 15s. Donaldson has previously been before the Court. VERY HEAVY BETTING FINE. P.A. PALMERSTON N., March 19. A fine of £4OO was imposed on Victor Hannah, salesman, 37, on a charge of bookmaking, in the Magistrate’s Court. Detective Long said that when accused’s premises were raided on Saturday, 536 bets totalling £922 had been taken. Accused was recognised as one of the biggest bookmakers in the city. His four previous fines for bookmaking totalled £675. The Magistrate (Mr. Lawry) said that fines in the case of accused were getting into a region where he.could expect fines no longer. ■John Douglas Pollard, mechanic, 33, was lined £lOO on a charge of bookmaking.
