— American Entry to Salver© (Rec. 9.5.) LONDON, March 18. American armoured vehicles of the Fifth Army on Friday broke into Salvero, a few hundred yards from the Bologna-F’istonia highway, behind the German stronghold, Vergato. Attacking at dawn, after heavy artillery preparation, the armoured forces and infantry captured several buildings in Salvero, including portion of a heav-ily-defended church. The Germans laid: down a heavy artillery and mortar counter-barrage. They forced the Fifth Army forces to withdraw from the town. German infantry on the Eighth Army front attacked an Allied strong point on the east bank of the Senio River, at Sanpolito. They were beaten off after suffering casualties.
