MAN DROWNED

ATTEMPT TO RESCUE TWO YOUTHS.

P.A. AUCKLAND, February 18. An attempt to rescue two youths who got into difficulties while swimming near Waiuku resulted in a man losing his life. He was Alfred Kidd, aged 28, married, with three youngchildren. Two youths, Albert Bailes Ferry, aged IS. and William Arthur Moore, aged 16, were swimming off the beach when they were carried out beyond the breakers. Kidd bound two fishing lines together, tying one end around his body, ■ and giving the other to a boy lo hold on the shore. He left instructions that he should be pulled in when he gave a signal. Kidd swam out, reached the' youths, and signalled back to the snore, but the line snapped and Kidd disappeared His body was later washed ashore. In a second attempt to rescue the youths, Ernest John Rook, an elder! v farmer, obtained a horse and swam out on it through the breakers. Perry, who is not a strong swimmer, caught hold of the horse’s tail and was brought ashore. Moore also managed to struggle to safety.
