Troopers J. R. Hill, and E. Leonard, 2nd N.Z.E.F. Westport are visiting Greymouth, as the guests of Mrs. J. Rodden, Preston Road.
Mr. F. S. B. Dawson, Traffic Inspector, Railways Department," Greymouth, has been transferred to Dunedin. He will be replaced by Mr. B. T. Stanley, Otira.
Major-General H. K. Kippenberger has been awarded by Mr. Roosevelt the Legion of Merit (Degree of Commander), in recognition of his services to the Allies.
Flight Sergeant T. 18. Morley, R.N.Z.A.F.. has been promoted to Warrant Officer. Advice has been received by his wife Mrs. Trevor Morley.
Mrs. G. Simpson, of Taumarunui, has arrived to join her husband, Mr. G. Simpson, who recently arrived on transfer to take up the position of yard foreman, Railways Department.
Mr. Azar Griffiths, formerly of the Greymouth Post Office staff, and recently Postmaster at Riverton, has, with ’ Mrs. Griffiths, arrived in Greymouth, where they intend to take up their residence.
Mr. Chas. Fraser, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Fraser, of Greymouth, who until recently was a member of the R.N.Z.A.F., and has now returned from overseas, has taken upj the position of Chief Clerk at Seaview Mental Hospital, Hokitika.

Known to be over a century in age, and believing himself to be one hundred and four years, Te Tane Ruwhiu, the Patriaixh of N'gapuhia, died near Taheke, North Auckland, on Friday night. He was born at Otaua, where he resided all his life, except for several years at Horeke, till the death of his second wife. A conservative estimate places his descendants at over three thousand.—P.A.
The death occurred at the Reefton Hospital on Saturday morning of Mr. Albert John Warring 88 years. He was a native of Cornwall, and came to the West Coast 70 years ago. He was a blacksmith at the mines around Reel'ton district for many years, and later was farming at ,
Ikamatua. The late Mr. Warring who was a member of the Pacific Masonic Lodge, Reefton, was predeceased by his wife many years ago. and i.s survived by one son Robert (Christchurch). The ' funeral takes place at Reefton to-day.
The death occurred yesterday mornning' at Greymouth after a short illness, of Mrs. Margaret Harding, wife of Mr. William Harding, of Blackball. She was aged 63 years. Mrs. Harding was born at Cowden Beath, Scotland, and came to New Zealand more than 30 years ago. She had lived at Blackball for the past 20 vears. Besides her husband she leaves one daughter, Mrs. K. Newton (Christchurch) and two sons James Stone (overseas) and Bennett Harding (Blackball), also two sisters Mrs. Ann. Hunter and Miss J. Cooper (Westport) and two brothers, Mr. Lawrence Cooper (Westport) and Mr. Jack Cooper (Murchison). The funeral will take place to-morrow at Karoro Cemetery.
In a statement yesterday, the Minister 'of Defence (Hon. F. Jones), announced that Major-General P. H. Bell CPI. D. 5.0., A.D.C. to the King, N.Z.’ Staff -Corps, District Commandant of the Northern Military District, is shortly to retire from the service on account of having reached the retiring age. “On the retirement of this" distinguished Army officer,” said Mr. Jones, “I would like to take the opportunity of paying a tribute to the very fine service he has rendered, especially during the present war. Under normal dircumstances Major-Genera] Bell would have retired in 1941 when he reached the retiring age, but on account of antiinvasion measures that Had to be taken as a result of Japan’s entry into the war, complete mobilisation of the Territorial Force, and the presence of large numbers of Allied servicemen in New Zealand, it was necessary to retain him on the active list. He. will be succeeded in his appointment as District Commandant by Brigadier A. B. Williams, D. 5.0., R.N.Z.A.. to whom he is now handing over his command. Prior to proceeding to Auckland, Brigadier Williams was Commandant of the Central Military District, which appointment he recently handed over to Brigadier L. Potter, D. 5.0., N'.Z. Staff Corps, who commanded a brigade in. the 3rd. N.Z. Division in the Pacific.” —P.A.
