HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, November 30

Miss M. McFarlane, sub-matron of Sea View 1 Mental Hospital, left Hokitika on Tuesday for Forirua Mental Hospital on promotion. Prior to her departure, the members of the staff made her a presentation of a sandwich set and tray, the presentation being made by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. T. W. Childs. Miss McFarlane will be succeeded here by Miss J. Rutherford, of Kingseat. The main highway now extends to the Paringa River, approximately 40 miles south of Weheka. From the Paringa to the Haast the length of the road to be constructed is about 35 miles. At present a pack track exists on this portion of the route. The section of road south of the Haast is being pushed ahead to provide access for the settlers. When the highway is extended from the Paringa to the Haast, it will be possible to do the round trip. The road from Weheka to the Paringa is considered one of the best constructed and conditioned road? in New Zealand. From a scenic point of view is it unrivalled. The funeral of the late Mrs Amelia' Diedrich took place yesterday afternoon, services at All Saints’ Church and the graveside being conducted by Rev. H. A. Childs. Many beautiful floral tributes were received from friends throughout the district, and other parts of New Zealand. The cortege was a lengthy one, friends from all parts of the district being present. At the Church the hymn “Abide With Me” was sung, and the Dead March was played by Miss Davies, the organist. The late Mrs Diedrich took a keen interest in All Saints’ Church, part of the interior furnishing having been dedicated to her late parents.

The funeral of the late Mr Charles W. Stoop took place on Tuesday afternoon.' Members of the Westland County Council acted as pall-bearers. The service at the. graveside was conducted by, Fastor C. L. .Ward, assisted bv the Rev. Hayman. Friends from all parts of the county were present, and a large number of floral tributes was received.
