BRUTAL ASSAULT

ON TWO AUCKLAND WOMEN. P.A. AUCKLAND, October 11. Two middle-aged women were victims of a brutal assault in an apartment house at Grey Lynn this evening. The victims were: Mrs Charlotte Poll, aged 53 years, the widowed owner of the house, who suffered multiple head and body injuries. Sue was admitted to hospital and her condition is very serious. Mrs Rita Needham, who lives in the house. She suffered head and body injuries, but was discharged after treatment. The assault took place in the kitchenette. Miss June Poll, daughter of Mrs Poll, was also attacked, but escaped from the house and informed the Newton police. A patrol drove to the house. In the kitchenette, which was extensively damaged and disordered, they found the two women unconscious. Mrs Poll had been thrown on to the stove with such force that part of it was broken. The police arrested a Samoan, aged 38 years, who was a lodger in the house.
