SPORTING

For Methven: Dianus has been raring, well but unluckily of late. The daughter of lack Potts claims an engagement in the Methven Cun and as she has already been a winner on the course, her chances cannot be overlooked. Dianus was started twice at the recent Wellington meeting but on neither occasion did she get a good run. Surprised:

The Surveyor gelding. Air Port, paid over a score when he took the President’s Handicap at Paeroa. Jumping through to the front when the barriers were released, he was never afterwards headed. In Good Order:

There is no doubt that Desmond’s Pride is greatly improved. The Quite Sure colt gave .a glorious display of trotting at Geraldine among the pacers. Making a good beginning he was in fifth place early, and after improving to be third with five furlongs to go, he eventually finished fifth. Desmond’s Pride has fined down a lot since he last sported silk, and as he nulled up sound, he should make his presence felt amorfg the improving trotters before the season is far advanced. Wen Pulling Up: Home Again returned his supporters over half a century for a win when he led the field home in his division of the Second Trial Handicap at the Thames Jockey Club’s meeting. Home Again is a six-year-old Autopay gelding, and although he has taken some time to strike form, he may vet go on to better things, as he gave nothing else a look in an Saturday, to win pulling up.

Likely Novice: Lucky Alex impressed many good judges when he finished fourth in the Handicap Hurdles at Paeroa. He was always up with the leaders forcing the pace, but he tired a little in the run home. Lucky Alex is only a baby as hurdlers go- being a four-year-old and this was only his second appearance on a racecourse. By the Suiveyor horse Surview. he is out of Gold Beauty, so is bred on sound jumping lines. Easv for Sousa:

The Vaals mare, Sousa, improved on any of her previous showings, when she led from end to end in the Ngatea Handicap at Paeroa. No doubt staying is her forte, as she came right away from her field i* the run home to win by the best part of four lengths. Sousa is a daughter of Queen March, one of the best middle distance performers of her time, and’ now that she has struck a winning vein may carry on with it.

Out of Luck: Lord Theio appeared unlucky to Jose in his division of the Thames Trial Plate. Despite drawing th? outside at the barrier he was soon doing it nicely out in front, but crossing the top he appeared to lose a bit of ground as Seafire rushed past him. He followed Seafire, Eonny Baf and Jovial Lad into the straight but once he got clear he finished with a great burst to go under bv a nose. Lord Theio is very well just now and should soon make amends. Stayq Well: . Lucky Loval is at his best over a distance. He will appreciate the mile and five furlong journey he is to race over at Methven.
