VICTORY LOAN

MONEY FOR STRUGGLE Hon. J. O’Brien’s Appeal “Now that victory in Europe is seemingly almost within our grasp’, many people seem to think all we have to do is to celebrate the occasion,” said Hon. J. O’Brien, Member for Westland, last evening, when interviewed by>, an “Argus” reporter. “But I want to assure them that things are not as simple as all that. It is true our soldiers and our Allies have done wonders, but German Fascists are still fighting back, and we are still sending reinforcements forward to the battle zone in Europe. And while we wish for the best, we know there are stern days ahead of us. Japan, too, will take a lot of beating, even after peace is declared in Europe. We have to remember that, in order to clinch our victory, we have to have money to bring our five years of sacrifice to a' successful conclusion —we have to subscribe the money necessary to keep .our troops equipped with the best armament, and fighting fit, to finish the job which was forced upon us over five years ago. A Victory Loan has been launched, and the necessary finance is not coming forward as freely as it should. And I wish to make a strong appeal to those holding back, and to point out that they have a duty to do, which should be a pleasure to them, and that is to find the money that will shortly bring our soldier bovs home with victory assured.”

SUPPORT THE VICTORY LOAN AN APPEAL TO TRADE UNIONISTS. The members of the West Coast Trades Council pledge their wholehearted support of the Victory Loan. We urge upon all trade unionists the need to subscribe as liberally and as quickly as possible to the loan. If, through lack of support from the working people, the loan is not successful, we will deserve the heavier taxation the Government will be compelled to levy upon us. The men in the armed forces must be fully provided for, whatever the cost to the rest of us. By subscribing to the Victory Loan, we give sunport to those thousands of fellow-unionists in the fighting forces, and we give support to the Government, which, we consider, has so ably administered the affairs- of the nation through the extremely difficult w.ar years. To-day we suffer less hardship than the workers of any other country engaged in the war. It is our fighting men who have made, and are making, the real sacrifices. We should regard it as a privilege, as well as a duty, to lend our few pounds to .assist the Allied Nations on the road to final and complete victory -over the working people’s deadliest enemy—Fascism.

We earnestly appeal to all our affiliations and their members to do their utmost to ensure that Westland reaches its quota in the Victory Loan.

—The West Coast Trades Council
