JAPANESE ARMIES

In South China (Rec. 9.50) CHUNGKING, Sept. 25. Although' the Japanese drive on Kweilin has officially been reported by the Chinese as having been stalled 40 miles north-eastward of the city, the Chinese High Command has indicated that there is a danger thin the Japanese might outflank Kweilin. There is an enemy column 67 miles north-eastward of Kweilin, striking south. This column could swing south-west to cut the railway southward of Kweilin, thus neutralising the city, and also threatening Liuchow, 90 miles further south. Chinese forces are fighting another Japanese column nine miles to the north-eastward of Wuchow. Chinese forces in south Kwangsi recaptured Sunshing, 75 miles south-west-ward of Canton. The Japanese made attacks on Paoching, 63 miles westward of Hengyang and were repulsed. The American Fourteenth AnForce reports that the ChineseAmerican wing accounted for more than 2600 tons of Japanese shipping in the week ended September 20. There are many Japanese planes within striking distance of the active war fronts, but the enemy has been hesitant to throw in air power.

CHINA’S PART WASHINGTON, Sept. 24. Mr Nelson has returned from China carrying Marshal Chiang KaiShek’s approval of Mr Roosevelt’s plans to throw China’s industrial strength into the war against Japan. A War Production Board spokesman said that the details of the mission must be withheld until Mr Nelson has had a conference with Mr Roosevelt. However, it could be said that he received good co-operation from the Chinese Government and was convinced that the Chinese were determined to make a just contribution industrially to the war against Japan.
