The attempt was broken up. We sighted a of thirteen, barges and one motor sampan carrying men and equipment. These were immediately brought under fire by United States warships, some of which pushed through mined waters to a close range. A number of the barges were seen to explode. Later ten wrecked barges were counted on reefs north-eastwards of Peleliu. It is thought the remainder were sunk. A few of the enemy probably were able to swim ashore without equipment.
