STOCKTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent!.

The Stockton Sick Fund at _ a meeting decided to invest in tl*e Victory Loan £lOO, making the total invested by the Fund in Government loans £3OO.

Pte. K. and Mrs Williams and daughter, of New Plymouth, are spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs H. C. Evans.

Mrs W. Parfitt is home again after being a patient in the Westport Hospital for several months. Mr H. Evans has entered Westport Hospital for treatment. His many friends wish him a speedy return to good health. Messrs F. Conenw, A. McArthur and I. Tyler have returned after addressing a series of meetings in Greymouth, Runanga, Blackball and. Reefton opposing the introduction of private contracting in the Stockton State mine. The delegates gave a very satisfactory account of support received. They stated many, were surprised to learn of the situation existing. At a special general meetin o- of Ngakawau Miners’ Union on, Sunday, Mr F. Connew presiding, it was unanimously resolved to support a recommendation from the Buller Miners’ Central Committee that .a delegation representative of all Buller Miners’ Unions, also the Grey Central Committee, proceed to Wellington to further discuss private contracting in the Stockton mine. The delegation is expected to leave this week. Ngakawau Union representatives will be Messrs A. McArthur, F. Connew and L Tyler. There also was a discussion on the introduction of a bus service to Webb Town, members being of the opinion that, seeing that the Union had fought for years to get the road constructed, and, as it had now been open for many months, a bus service was long overdue. The mine emoloyees had to travel approximately ten miles to and from their work, besides having to wait in the loops. West Coast weather is such that mine workers are fully justified in endeavouring to obtain all protection possible from the elements. Employees of the Stockton mine often became wet going to work, or inside the mine, or when returning after their shift is over. It is to be' hoped that the inauguration of a suitable method of transport to and from the mine would not long be delayed.
