MANPOWER APPEALS

SITTING AIT GREYMOUTH The Armed Forces Appeal Board sat at Greymouth yesterday Mr. W. Meldrum presiding. With him were Messrs P. J. O’Regan and A. Panther and Mr. G. G. M. Mitchell, Secretary. Appeals in respect of mining employees were heard as follows:— D. R. Williams (electrician); S. Whitehead, timberman; C. G. A. Uddstrom, miner; D. Me. N. Sheddan, shiftman; G. Lee, trucker; A. Dearden, trucker; F. P. Willis, trucker; R. W. Scott, shiftman; L. J.Darby, trucker; B. W. J. Behm, trucker; K. J. Neilson, trucker; K. P. Watson, trucker; G. P. Gilbert, shiftman; (State Coal Mines); D. Bell, miner (Bellvue Mines Ltd); G. T. Bowman, miner (Harrison and Party); J. A. Burke, miner and horse driver (Stuart and Party).—All adjourned Sine die.

Appeals for employees of the sawmilling industry were heard as follows:—J. Schist, sawmiller; R. E. Hewer, second bushman; G. Featherstone. loco fireman (West Coast Sawmillers’ Association). —Release from Air Force recommended. C. C. Fowler, bushman; E. J. Knight tailer out; J. M. Ord, bushman; F. O. Burrows, tailer out; D. G. Freitas, sawyer (West Coast Sawmillers’ Association). —

Inter-Wanganui Dairy Company (Mr. D. B. Jellie) applied for the release fom the Air Force of P. J. Haddock. Mr. Jellie said that if Haddock were released he would be employed as a butter-maker.—Release recommended.

I N.Z. Railways (Mr. J. Binsted), appealed for J. W. McFarlane, lifter. McFarlane said he was employed as a lifter by the Railways Department at Stillwater. I-Ie objected to being appealed for and said he did not think the job was so essential that it should keep him out of the forces. Mr Binsted in evidence said that McFarlane had a good deal of knowledge of this class of work. He was sent out to country stations to effect repairs to wagons. He might be considered as an acting train examiner at the end of the year. The Department was very short of this class of labour and had difficulty in recruiting it. There was a need of four train examiners. He agreed there was not agreat future in the work. —Dismissed obligation to serve to be postponed for one month. The Public Works Department (Mr. E. F. Evans) appealed for W. C. Burr, baker, Mr. Evans said that Burr, was a baker at Jackson Bay and had to bake at least twice a week for the men employed there. —Adjourned sine die. The Grey Hospital Board (Mr. J. E. A. McKeefry) appealed for H. T. Thompson, house surgeon. Mr. McKeefry said that Thompson had been employed by the Board for nearly 12 months and his services were required.—Adjourned sine die. L. A. Ilton farmer, appealed on his own behalf. The Primary Production Council recommended a sine die adjournment. Evidence stated that Ilton, formery employed in a sawmill, had just taken over the farm. —Adjourned sine die. . t J K. Henderson, hotel proprietor, appealed on his own behalf. Henderson said he was proprietor of the Club Hotel, Blackball, and was formerly employed in the Blackball mine, which he had left on medical advice. There were seven permanent boarders at the hotel.-—Adjourned sine die. Griffen and Smith (Mr. C. R. MeGinley) for H. G. Weaver, lorry driver. Mr. Errol Smith, secretary to the company said it was necessary to have a fit man as a driver, and it was not easy to secure a man tor tms work—Adjojurned sine die. Mrs. I. McGlashan (Mr. W. D. Taylor) appealed for I. H. Innes, clerk, and for the release from the Air Force of J. Clark, motor mechanic Mrs. McGlashan said that before the war she had four mechanics and her staff was now reduced to one, and an apprentice. She was therefoie obliged to appeal for the release of Clark from the. Air Force. A large amount of .servicing was done, innes

had been specially trained and there was no one to take his place. He also attended to sales of petrol.—The appeal for Innes was adjourned sine die, and Clark’s release was recommended.

Greymouth Motors Ltd., (Mr. G. Sansom) appealed for H. D. Asnurst, mechanic. Mr. Sansom said that the mechanical staff had- worked more than 600 hours overtime in the last three months. There were now five mechanics where previously there fifteen. —Adjourned sine die. Kennedy Bros. (Mr. McGinley) appealed for W. M. Hibbs, bus driver. Mr. W. Kennedy manager of Kennedy Bros., said that Hibbs had been released from the mines to work for the company. They had lost a driver on health grounds.—Adjourned sine die.

M. McDonnell (Mr. McGinley) appealed for H. J. McDonnell, traveller.—Held over for one month. Associated Gold Dredges (N.Z.) Ltd., (Mr. Taylor) appealed for S. W. Gillman, dredge hand. Mr. G. Cuff said that Gillman was one of a party clearing ahead of the Atarau dredge. Production would be affected if Gillman were taken. Only four were working now instead of the normal complement of six.—Adjourned sine die

T. H. Green (Mr. A. F. Jamieson) appealed for the release from the Air Force of S. C. Cropp, carpenter. Mr. Jamieson, said that Green was working at house construction for the State Housing Department and the Mines Department. At present he employed 14 men including himself. —Release recommended. A. Baty (Mr. Taylor) appealed for the release from the army of E. E. Baty, W.A.A.C. Mr. Baty said his daughter had been in the army for nearly two years. His wife was in ill health, and he wanted the assistance of his daughter who was' willing to come out of the army.—Release recommended. , R. McKenzie (Mr. Taylor) appealed for the release from the Air Force of H. C. McKenzie, car painter. McKenzie said he had more work than he could handle and worked about 70 hours a week. He was asking for his brother’s release so that he could help with this work. —Release recommended.
