Mrs. C. Bailey leaves to-da v on return to Christchurch.

Miss M. Trott left last evening for Dunedin where she is to judge the fancy dancing sections ot the competitions festival.

Messrs A. E. Sampson (Rotomanu) and D. J. Bradley (Kaiata) have been posted to the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Mr W. Searle, of Harihari, left last evening for Wellington, where he is to attend a meeting of the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union.

Flving Officer K. Crankshaw, DIF.C., D.F.M., of Greymouth, has arrived in New Zealand from England, and is to arrive here shortly oh a visit to his parents, Mr and Mrs T. Crankshaw. ■

Mr G. L. Bertram, of the staff of the Jost and Telegraph Department workshops, Greymouth, leaves shortly for Wellington, where he will enter the workshops section of the Staff Training School.

Pte. M. J. Acker, W.A.A.C., of Greymouth Army Department, who leaves to-day oh transfer to Burnham, was farewelled yesterday by fellow members of the staff and presented with a fountain pen.

The Superintendent of State Mines, Mr C. J. Strongman, has resigned the chairmanship of the Coal Council. Mr John Dowgray, of Granity, who temporarily filled the position, has been succeeded by Mr Job Hughes, Inspector of Mines, Dunedin.

The death of Mrs Mary Ethel (Amy) Sandman, a native of Greymouth, took place at Wellington last week. The eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs A. W. Yarrall, she is survived by her husband, and one sister, Mrs L. F. de Berry, Christchurch.

Mr William Hassall, aged 60 years, whose death occurred at Auckland on Sunday, was a native of Kumara, and a brother of Mr James Hassall, of Greymouth. A carpenter by trade he had been in ill health for some time. His wife survives him.

A wedding of interest to Grey district residents took place in Kent, England, on Friday last, when Miss Cecelia Keating, elder daughter of Mrs. Claire Keating and the late Mr. Michael Keating (Clerk of the Grey County Council) was married to Major Terence Dew, of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Middle East, ana son of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Dew, formerly of Greymouth. The ceremony took place at the residence of the bride’s mother, Bryancoeding, Seven Oaks.

The death occurred at the Westland Hosnital on Sunday of a wellknown and esteemed resident of Hokitika, Mr Carl August Schroder, aged 74 years. The late Mr Schroder came to New Zealand over 70 years a o-o from Germany and has resided in the district practically all this period. Besides his wife he is survived by four daughters, Mrs J. Breeze and Mrs T. Lynch (Hokitika), Mrs R. Cowan (Mahinapua) and Mrs L. Schroder ' (Lyttelton), three sons, Fred (Lyttelton), Carl and Harold (Hokitika) and two sisters, Mrs L. Rowe (Hokitika) and Mrs C. Marr (West port).

The death took place at Wellington on Saturday of Mrs Ann Barbara Holmes, aged 87 years. A native of Ross, the late Mrs Holmes resided .in Kumara for many years, her husband, the late Mr John Holmes having been a blacksmith there. About 14 years ago she left to reside in Wellington, ana until she experienced a fall about two months ago had enjoyed good health. Mrs Holmes who was predeceased by her husband about 25 years ago, is survived by two sons, John (Kumara) and Richard (Upper Moutere), and three daughters, Mrs G. H. Russell (Greymouth), Mrs M. F. F. Gembitsky (Auckland) and Mrs B. Miles (Wellington), also 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One son and one daughter predeceased her. The funeral took place at Wellington yesterdays
