99 FACTORIES SEIZED
BY U.S. GOVERNMENT IN ’FRISCO. (Rec. 11.10) NEWYORK, Aug. 20. President Roosevelt has ordered the Navy to take over and operate ninetynine machine shops in the San Francisco area. There has been an overtime dispute in this area, which has reduced outnut. The men’s action followed the‘ seizure of five machine shops in the same area last Tuesday, thereupon the Machinists’ Union banned work in excess of eight hours per dav or forty-eight hours per week. They thus defied the War Labour Board.
Mr. Roosevelt is trying to remove serious lags in the production of some vital war materials, says the New York “Herald-Tribune’s" Washington correspondent. He has ordered Mr. Wilson, Acting-Chairman of the War Production Board to step up the production of rader, heavv artillery and other equipment. The President’s action has been taken so soon after his return from his Pacific inspection that it is believed to be the outcome of his own observations during the tour, as well as of sobering reports on shortages given to him by Pacific commanders, and also bv General Marshall, wh'o tetonferred with him on Thursday.
