LULL IN ITALY

(Rec. 7.10) LONDON, Aug. 19. In Italy, heavy rain fell along the front of the Allied armies on Friday, in Florence, troops of the Eighth Army have virtually cleared the centre portion of the town from snipers. On both sides of the Upper Arno Valley and in the Adriatic sector British, Indian and Polish troops sent forward deep reconnaissance patrols. In the west of Florence sector Fifth Army, and enemy patrols are active. GERMAN ATROCITIES. (Rec 11.10) LONDON, Aug. 20. Algiers radio broadcast a statement from General Alexander’s Headquarters warning the German Army that a documented list of Germans who have committed atrocities against Italian civilians is steadily growing longer. It added: When an armistice is granted to Germany, those responsible for these atrocities will be sent back to those countries in which their abominable misdeeds have been committed and will be punished according to the laws of those countries.
