BELFAST M.P. FINED £10,000
WAR CONTRACT FRAUDS. (Rec. 9.0.) LONDON, August 10. William John Stewart, Conservative Member of the House of Commons for South Belfast, has been fined £lO,OOO on charges of conspiring to cheat the War Office of discounts on contracts. He was charged in his capacity as governing director of Stewart and Partners, a firm of public contractors. The Crown case was that the firm obtained secret discounts, whio.i should have been given to the WaiOffice, but the rebates did not appear in the books of the firm, which has handled seven millions sterling worm of war contracts since the outbreak of the war.
