INCREASE OF FEES
N.Z. UNIVERSITY. PRICE TRIBUNAL LOOKS INTO MATTER. P.A. WELLINGTON, July 4. “In view of various statements that have recently appeared in the press concerning University examination fees, the University desires it to be known that the new scale of fees, which has been introduced to distribute the costs of the University more fairly among the different faculties, and to remove the fee for graduation, as well as to meet the costs of University administration, has been under consideration for some years. It was finally passed by the Senate at its meeting in January, 1943,” states the Registrar of the University of New Zealand, Mr. McKenzie. ’ “All statutes passed by the University must, before coming into operation, be approved by the Governor-General-in-Council. Following the usual procedure, the draft amendments of 1943 were placed before the Education Department, which, after enquiry from an appropriate authority, deemed that no departure from the usual practice was necessary, and the Statutes were finally approved by the Govemor-in-Council in June, 1943, to come into effect on January 1, 1944. Fees at the new scale were paid for all entries closing on January 1, and 'are
being received for entries closing on July 10. At the request of the Price Tribunal, members of the Senate have been consulted, and it has been decided that all correspondence on this matter be considered at next meeting of the Executive Committee, called for July 28. . ;
